A Florida man killed his wive and shot his stepdaughter before fatally shooting himself during an incident that stemmed from an argument over an NFL game, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd announced during a press conference.
Jason Kenney, 47, fatally shot his wife, Crystal Kenney after she suggested he turn off the Monday Night Football game between the San Francisco 49ers and Indianapolis Colts on December 22, according to Judd. Kenney was reported to have been drinking and the argument escalated, which led to Judd telling her 12-year-old son to call 911.
The boy reportedly ran to a neighbor's home when he heard gunshots fired. Responding deputies found Kenney dead and her 13-year-old daughter with gunshot wounds to the shoulder and face when they arrived at the scene.
The 13-year-old girl is reported to be recovering at a hospital.
“She said, ‘I begged him, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, and he shot me anyway,’” Judd said during the press conference.
The 12-year-old boy and the couple's 1-year-old daughter, who responding deputies found sleeping in her crib, were uninjured. Kenney reportedly fled the scene and called his sister, who lives in upstate New York, and told her he had "done something" wrong, adding that it would be the last time they would talk before driving to his father's home, where responding deputies attempted to get him out of a shed before he fatally shot himself.
Authorities found a note from Crystal during a search of the family's home in which she urged her husband to get help.
“You’re drinking, you’re using cocaine again. This is not the way the family should be. You need God,” the note states, according to Judd.
Crystal's children are reported to be in the custody of their grandparents following the incident.
“The entire family was destroyed,” Judd said. “Our homicide detectives are distraught. When you go in there, there is a beautiful Christmas tree with lots of Christmas presents under it, just like the nuclear family should be.”
