Rescuers Save Elderly Couple, 2 Dogs Dangling Over Bridge In Pick-Up Truck

A couple is lucky to be alive after their pick-up truck plunged over the side of a bridge in southern Idaho. The 2004 Ford F-350 was left dangling 100-feet above the Malad Gorge after the safety chain attached to a 30-foot camper trailer got stuck on the side of the bridge.

When first responders arrived, they attached a second chain to the truck to secure it while a team of specially trained paramedics rappelled down the side of the bridge to free the 67-year-old man and 64-year-old woman trapped inside. They were both alert and suffered only minor injuries. The paramedics secured them with a harness and lifted them out of the truck and back onto the bridge. The paramedics also rescued two dogs that were in the truck.

The pair suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The dogs were taken to a family member of the couple.

"This was a tremendous team effort that took a quick response and really showed the dedication and training of our community of first responders," Captain David Neth of the Idaho State Police District 4 in Jerome said, according to KTVB. "This is something we train and prepare for, but when it happens, and people's lives literally hang in the balance, it takes everyone working together, and then some."

Investigators have not determined the cause of the crash.
