Teen arrested in connection with Sandy sex assault

A 15-year-old male was arrested in connection with a case involving a woman who was sexually assaulted while jogging in Sandy Monday afternoon.

According to Sandy Police Sgt. Jason Nielsen, the teen was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Salt Lake Valley Detention Center on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault, aggravated robber, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of forcible sodomy and two counts of obstruction.

Nielsen said the teen's name is being withheld because he is a juvenile.

The assault happened around 1 p.m. Monday on a trail in Sandy, Nielsen said. A woman in her 40s told police she was jogging on the trail when she was grabbed and sexually assaulted.

Nielsen said the woman flagged down bystanders after the attack, and they called police. The attacker fled before the call was made.

The woman was taken to a hospital in fair condition, Nielsen said.

Sandy police asked the public for help in identifying and finding the attacker. Tuesday's arrest was made following "tips from the public and diligent investigative work by Sandy detectives," Nielsen said.
