Man rams police cruiser before fleeing

Millcreek police are looking for a man they allege ran a stolen vehicle into a police cruiser early Tuesday morning. The events started shortly after 10 a.m. when an officer spotted a vehicle believed to be one that was reported stolen by Holladay police. The officer had also noticed someone in the vehicle, who has since been identified as 39-year-old Harley Gergory Welsh, who is reported to have been either asleep or passed out in the drivers seat of the vehicle.  The officer placed spike strips both in front of and behind the vehicle before calling for backup. Another squad car arrived to help pin the vehicle in before officers attempted to wake Welsh. Upon being woken up Welsh refused to exit the car and reversed the vehicle, hitting the two squad cars before fleeing.

Welsh later abandoned the vehicle when the tires went flat as a result of running over the spike strips. Officers located the car but found that Welsh had fled on foot to a nearby car lot, and stole a black Ford Excursion that was already running.

Anyone with information about Welsh's whereabouts or the vehicle is encouraged to call police at 801-743-7000.
