A man and woman are now facing potential charges related to a burglary and arson of an abandoned residence in Salt Lake City. The pair had been squatting at the abandoned residence, and were told by the property owner and a maintenance worker they needed to leave the home because it was going to be boarded up. After being told to vacate, Carlos Ojeda-Chaparro and Sabrina Holm then allegedly set fire to a plastic grocery bag and threw it in a bedroom inside the house, before leaving. They left the residence and did not call emergency personnel to inform them of the fire they had started.
Smoke was eventually noticed coming from the home by the property owner and the maintenance worker. Fire crews were called to the scene, but by the time they arrived the home had received extensive damage as the flames spread throughout the structure.
The pair now face potential charges of arson, felony burglary, criminal trespass, and others.
