A 14-year-old girl who was reported missing was found injured in a ditch in Cache County early Friday. Calls came into the Cache County Sheriff's office around 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening reporting that the girl had not returned home from school. She had been in contact through texting her family throughout the day, until late that afternoon. Her normal after school routine consisted of taking a bus around 2:30 p.m. to Sky View High School and then taking a second bus home, usually arriving around 4 p.m.
Shortly before 1 a.m. Friday morning Smithfield police were called to a report of a "medical situation" in a dry canal east of Sky View High where the girl was located. She had "significant injuries" that required transportation to a local hospital. She ended up being flown to a Salt Lake-area hospital for further treatment. It's currently unknown how she became injured or how she ultimately ended up in the ditch. So far investigators cannot definitively say if she was assaulted or not.
The ditch is considered to be a high traffic area with multiple joggers and people walking their dogs passing by, so investigators believe she wasn't there very long before being discovered.
