The House Judiciary Committee have given unanimous approval to HB251. The Tuesday vote came after over an hour of debate and testimony on the bill, which would encourage college students who experience sexual or interpersonal violence to seek help from college advocates. The bill's sponsor, House Minority Assistant Whip Angela Romero, D-Salt Lake City, says that she believes the bill would encourage more victims to come forward so they can receive the treatment they need and help law enforcement be able to catch those responsible. The committee was largely supportive of the bill, rejecting an attempt to amend the legislation by striking language that made it apply to private institutions.
