Brigham Young University announced on Thursday a major change to student housing rules, reported KSL. Single students will no longer be required to live in on-campus or off-campus contracted housing after the first two semesters of attending the school.

Student life vice president Julie Franklin said in a prepared statement, “These decisions were made in an effort to better serve our students and provide them with more options.”

According to BYU, graduate students and married students were not previously required to abide by the same rules and live in campus contracted housing. BYU off-campus contracted housing will now only be available to students of Brigham Young University.

According to Franklin, students in their first two semesters are still required to live in BYU housing or off-campus contracted housing. Franklin said in the statement, “Research repeatedly shows that students who initially have this close association with their fellow students have a better and more successful college experience.”

These housing changes only apply to Brigham Young University. They do not apply to BYU Hawaii, BYU Idaho, or Ensign college.
