Santa Cruz Police Chief Kneels With Peaceful Protesters

As hundreds of protesters gathered in Santa Cruz, California, on Saturday (May 30), they had the support of the city's police department and its chief. The Santa Cruz Police Department shared a photo on Instagram of Chief Andy Mills, taking a knee next to a protester wearing a red bandana over their face.

"Hundreds gathered on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz Saturday morning, taking a knee together to honor the memory of George Floyd and bring attention to police violence against black people in this country," the department wrote.

Mills has been active on his personal Twitter account as well, using it to blast ex-cop Derek Chauvin and his fellow officers for their role in the death of George Floyd. Chauvin was charged with murder after he was seen on video putting his knee on Floyd's neck for eight minutes. He refused to remove his knee, even after Floyd said he couldn't breathe and begged for help.

"Chauvin's actions and those around him are the antithesis of what we view as good policing. The other officers had a duty to step in and stop this violent assault, and they failed," Mills said.

Floyd's death on Monday (May 25) sparked a week of protests in dozens of cities across the country.
