Vandals Spray Paint Red Graffiti On Plymouth Rock

Vandals have struck multiple historical artifacts in Plymouth, Massachusetts, including spray painting red graffiti on the historic Plymouth Rock. The vandals also caused damage to a pair of painted scallop shells, a commemorative bench, a century-old statue known as the "Pilgrim Maiden," and the National Monument to the Forefathers.

"Seeing this type of disrespect for the historic reminders of the Mayflower story is both sad and unsettling," Lea Filson, executive director of local tourism group See Plymouth, told WBTS. "The outpouring of concern and anger over the incident has been a positive ending to a thoughtless gesture."

The acts of vandalism come as the town is celebrating its quadricentennial, marking the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims arriving in America on the Mayflower. It is unclear if the vandalism is related to the celebration, which is slated to begin in April.

Police have launched an investigation into the acts of vandalism but have not made any arrests. Cleaning crews removed the graffiti a few hours after it was discovered.
