Teacher Who Called Military 'Lowest Of The Low' Is Fired

A history teacher in Southern California has been fired after he went on a profane rant against the military in his classroom. The El Rancho Unified School District said they had reached a unanimous to fire Gregory Salcido for telling students that members of the military are the "lowest of our low."

“His comments do not reflect what we stand for, who we are,” [Board of Education President Aurora] Villon said, adding that “the classroom should never be a place where students feel that they are picked at, bullied, intimidated."

Salcido, who serves on the Pico Rivera City Council, apologized for his comments during a city council meeting in February. He did not backtrack on his tirade but instead tried to clarify his comments, telling people he was not referring to the "moral character" of members of the military.

I don't think it's all a revelation to anybody that those who aren't stellar students usually find the military a better option ... that's not a criticism of anybody. Anything I said had nothing to do with their moral character.

He faced multiple calls to resign during the same meeting but refused to leave his job.

The Board of Education received thousands of e-mails from people all over the world who were offended by Salcido's comments. Many of the e-mails were from veterans and their family members.

Salcido has 30 days to appeal the decision.
