The body of a man who went missing while hiking in the mountains was recovered Wednesday morning. The remains of Shaw Trent Phillipsen, 22, were spotted by a helicopter around 9:30 a.m., according to Cedar City Police. Phillipsen had been sending pictures of the hike to his friends on the app Snapchat, indicating he was hiking in the mountains east of Cedar City, but they grew concerned when he never returned.
Iron County Search and Rescue crews and police K-9 unites were dispatched Tuesday near the area where Phillipsen's vehicle had been found. Law enforcement personnel from the area assisted in the search both on foot and through use of ATVs in the rough terrain. Aerial crews spotted the body and were able to retrieve it. Upon initial investigation officials say signs of trauma were found that would be consistent with some sort of fall having taken place. The body will be taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Salt Lake City for an official cause of death determination.
