The former commander of an Iron County jail has pleaded not guily to misusing public money. Bret Allred entered pleas of not guilty Wednesday to four counts of misuse of public funds. Court documents say Allred, when he was commander of the jail, was responsible for ensuring that public funds were used appropriately, but used them for his own personal benefit. He is accused of misusing the funds on four occasions-twice in 2012, once in 2015, and one time last year.
If convicted Allred faces up to five years in prison. He resigned shortly after the investigation began in 2015. Officials familiar with the matter say the case will likely be settled before going to trial, as the defense and the prosecution are already in negotiations.
