LDS Church announces new education initiative

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is announcing a new online, church-wide higher education organization. The church has created BYU-Pathway Worldwide, which will handle all online learning opportunities in the Church Education System. It will provide a number of certificate and degree opportunities to students worldwide.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor of the church's First Presidency, announced that Clark Gilbert, the current president of BYU-Idaho and former president and CEO of Deseret Digital Media will take over the operations of BYU-Pathway Worldwide as its president.

Pathway was started as a pilot program at BYU-Idaho in 2009, and served three locations in Idaho, Arizona, and New York. The program will be fully operational May 1, 2017.
